What to Expect at Your Sunroom Studio Newborn Session in Downtown Waco
Bringing a brand new baby anywhere can feel like a whole production, especially in those first few weeks. The good news is that preparing for a studio newborn session doesn’t have to be complicated.
Studio newborn photography is a great option for families who want beautiful, natural newborn photos without worrying about getting the house cleaned, decluttered, or photo ready beforehand. At Sunroom Studio in downtown Waco, everything is already set up for us to slow down, follow your baby’s lead, and focus on your family.
Here are a few simple ways to prepare for your newborn photography session at the studio.
Keep the Morning of Your Session Simple
There is no need to create a perfectly planned schedule before your newborn session. Babies are unpredictable, especially during those first few weeks, and that is completely okay.
If possible, try to keep your baby awake for an hour or two before your session so they may be ready for a good sleep once we begin. But if that doesn’t happen, please don’t stress about it. I adapt each newborn session around the baby in front of me rather than expecting every baby to follow the same routine.
Feed your baby as you normally would, give yourself plenty of time to get ready, and try not to put too much pressure on getting out the door at the exact perfect moment.
Feedings and Breaks Are Part of the Session
One of the biggest things I want parents to know is that we are not in a rush.
Your baby may need to eat, be changed, soothed, rocked, or simply held for a while. We can stop whenever we need to.
I have four kids myself, so very little surprises me when it comes to photographing babies and families. There is no expectation that your newborn will sleep the entire session or cooperate with every idea we have planned.
Some of the sweetest photographs often happen during those breaks anyway.
What to Bring to Your Studio Newborn Session
You really do not need to pack your entire house.
Bring the things you would normally want with you when leaving home with your newborn, including:
Diapers and wipes
An extra outfit for baby
A pacifier if your baby uses one
Bottles or feeding supplies if needed
A burp cloth
An extra shirt for yourself, just in case
Any sentimental item you would specifically like photographed
If there is a special blanket, heirloom, outfit, or small item that has meaning to your family, feel free to bring it. We can decide during the session whether it fits naturally into the photographs.
What Should Everyone Wear?
For newborn photographs, I usually recommend keeping clothing fairly simple so your family remains the focus.
Neutral colors, soft textures, and coordinating tones tend to photograph beautifully in the natural light at Sunroom Studio. You do not need everyone in matching outfits. Instead, choose colors that work well together without competing for attention.
For baby, simple is often best. A neutral onesie, swaddle, diaper, or bare little legs allows us to focus on all of those newborn details that change so quickly.
Most importantly, choose something you feel comfortable in. These photographs should feel like your family, not like everyone is wearing a costume for picture day.
You Do Not Need a Perfectly Sleeping Baby
This is probably one of the biggest misconceptions about newborn photography.
A sleepy newborn can certainly make some photographs easier, but your session does not depend on your baby sleeping the entire time.
I love photographing the little expressions, stretches, wide open eyes, yawns, curled up legs, and movements that are completely unique to your baby during this stage.
Rather than forcing every newborn into the same collection of poses, I work around what your baby is comfortable doing that day.
Sometimes they want to be swaddled. Sometimes they want to be held. Sometimes the best place for them is curled against mom or dad.
That is all part of the story.

One of my favorite things about photographing newborn sessions at Sunroom Studio is the flexibility the space gives us.
The studio has beautiful natural light coming from multiple directions, simple backgrounds, and plenty of room to photograph your baby individually as well as parents, siblings, and the entire family.
It also removes one major thing from your newborn session to-do list: preparing your house.
There is nothing to clean before I arrive, nothing that needs to be moved out of the background, and no need to wonder whether your home has enough natural light.
You can simply get everyone dressed, pack what your baby needs, and show up.
Older Siblings Are Welcome
Absolutely bring the big brothers and sisters.
Watching siblings meet and interact with a new baby is one of my favorite parts of newborn sessions. There is so much curiosity, excitement, and genuine wonder happening during this season.
And no, I do not expect toddlers or young children to sit perfectly still and smile at the camera.
We will work around them, too.
They can cuddle the baby, climb into your lap, explore the studio for a minute, or take a break when they need one. My goal is to capture your family as naturally as possible rather than spend the session trying to force everyone into perfect behavior.
Your Newborn Session Is Allowed to Be Slow
There is already enough pressure surrounding those first weeks with a baby. Your newborn photography session does not need to add to it.
We will take our time.
Your baby can eat. Your toddler can take a break. You can stop to fix your hair, change a diaper, or simply sit down for a minute.
My approach to newborn photography is less about creating a perfectly posed photograph and more about preserving what your family feels like during a season that passes incredibly quickly.
Because years from now, you probably will not care whether your baby slept for the entire session.
You will care that you can still see the way they curled against your chest, the shape of their tiny hands, the expression on their sibling’s face, and the way your family looked when this little person was brand new.
